How can physical therapists help get special assistive or adaptive equipment for my child?

Physical therapists are trained to analyze a child’s movement and determine what assistance is needed to increase function. Sometimes PT’s will suggest equipment, and sometimes parents request equipment. No matter the process, a physical therapist’s role is to: educate families on different types of adaptive equipment, help determine the best piece of equipment, and advocate for the child’s needs throughout the process of ordering that equipment. A physical therapist will connect the family to the equipment provider, help choose the best piece of equipment, and then medically justify the need for adaptive equipment to insurance.
