What does Occupational Therapy look like for children?

Occupational therapy for children is typically focused on fine motor skills, gross motor skills, self-care skills, sensory processing, visual skills and attention. These areas would be targeted by working with caregivers to incorporate opportunities to practice and strengthen these skills into that child's daily routine. Daily routines for children would likely include meal time, play time, school work, gross motor play/outside play and transitions between activities. The OT would work with the family (in clinic, in home, in daycare or virtually) to develop goal areas that are important to the child and family. Weekly sessions would include follow up from the previous session and home program as well as working on developing new strategies/activities to continue to make progress toward the goal areas the family has established.
