Tummy Time: Birth to 3 Months

**ALWAYS SUPERVISE TUMMY TIME**

Tummy Time - Floor

  • Place infant on their belly
  • Use favorite toys to help engage theme
  • If infant needs more help to push up on elbows, can provide gentle downward pressure on infant's bottom
    *Tummy time is safe to begin within the first couple of weeks of being home.

The left picture is within 2 weeks of being home. At this stage infant can barely lift off ground, BUT should be able to clear airway enough to rotate head to other side.

Tummy Time - Towel Under Chest

  • Roll up medium sized towel lengthwise
  • Place under the chest for support
  • Bring arms forward in front of towel
  • Use favorite toys to engage or talk/sing to infant

Tummy Time - Parent's Chest

  • Support your head on a pillow when laying down
  • Place infant on your chest facing you
  • May need to support infant with your hands - support either at their chest or bottom to prevent them from rolling off your chest
  • Engage infant by talking to them, making faces at them, singing, etc

Tummy Time - Exercise Ball

  • Make sure you have a good grip on infant
  • Gently place on tummy on top of ball
  • Once both comfortable, can add slow rocking motions forward and backward - make sure you have a good grip
  • Place favorite toy or item of interest directly in front of ball to help engage them
